Join us for a personalized tour of the history of the Monteverde Community and a glimpse into the world of cheese making.
Our tour begins with the establishment of the Monteverde Community by Quakers in 1951. In 1953 they incorporated the Monteverde Cheese Factory, which became the first formal business to be established in Monteverde, and became the economic base of the Tilarán Mountain Range. The Quakers produced the first pasteurized cheese ever to be produced in Costa Rica.
In its 60 years of history the Monteverde Cheese Factory has grown to be the second largest cheese maker in Costa Rica, producing over twenty different types of cheeses.
On the tour you will enjoy a slide show that depicts the history of Monteverde and the full cheese making process. You will learn how different cheeses are made, from the Monte Rico-unique to Monteverde-made from our secret recipe, to varieties of Swiss and Dutch cheeses.
Prices: Regular $12, Students $10, Costa Ricans $6
Tour times: Monday to Saturday, two daily tours 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Special times can be coordinated, upon request, for groups.
The tour starts at the Monteverde Cheese Factory sales room.
